Evaluation

In what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When creating our music video, we wanted to follow conventions of a current music video of the same genre as closely as possible. During the research period we watched several  music videos to try and determine what the codes and conventions were. We also looked at current Videos from our artist Vanessa Carlton, we did this to see how she portrayed the themes and genre through her music videos. We found that most of these videos had a narrative structure, meaning they told a story, which some songs often do, we then decided this would be most appropriate for our video. We also noticed that the band members, in particular the main singer, was either the main character through the story, or where often featured throughout the video, we felt this was an important factor, as it creates a more natural effects, as if the signer is showing memories, instead of telling a story- this is the kind of affect we wanted.

In terms of the ancillary products, I think that my advert follows conventions, when beginning my project, I looked closely at how similar advert have been constructed in magazines and newspapers and based my advert on these, focusing on the main codes and conventions, such as text and images and most importantly the layout.. The research was hugely helpful as initially I didn’t know how to construct my advert, and after research of current adverts I made a few sketches of what mine should look like.

However, the tour program was a little harder to research, as i couldn't find much information on the internet, I had to ask friends and family if they had any sources i could use, i finally found a few programs, however they were for theatre shows. However i still feel they were a good reference for me to use.

How effective is the combination of your main ancillary texts?

I tried to reflect aspects of the video into the ancillary products, a good way of doing this was to continue on the colour scheme of red and black, i also had to consider that the text needed to fit the genre. As a group we had previously agreed on a dark, contrasting colours, red and black, we also thought this would tie in with the theme of love, with the red and despair with the black. We also decided on 3 different fonts that will be used throughout the tasks. This worked really well because our products were consistent which would allow the audience to be able to recognise our band, through the different media platforms for example they would see my advert and could instantly associate them with Vanessa Carlton.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From the audience feedback I have learnt that the music video looked professional and that the transitions and effects between each shot were good as it allowed the video to flow well. The locations were frequently mentioned during feedback, as some thought that it added verisimilitude and people could relate to the location. Another positive comment was that the audience could relate to the characters, and the story line. I feel that the story line of love a despair is something that everyone can relate to- no matter what their age.

Feedback associated to my ancillary tasks was mostly positive. However some comments were made that the Adverts didn't contain enough information, i feel this is something i could have resolved if i had taken some audience feedback into consideration earlier in the production process.

However the audiences still felt that my advert and program were very professional, and that the layout meant they were easy to read, and flowed better.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research, planning, and evaluation stages?

New media technologies were used during the research stage because I used several search engines to try and find out the conventions of all of my tasks. However, in some cases i had to use friends and family to find out information and get other sources. During planning, illustrator was used to create some simple layout designs, this included the colour scheme and the house font.
During construction, the music video was created on Adobe Premier Pro which was the best software to use because it allowed us to edit the video by importing videos and cutting them in the correct places and inserting fades between each shot. When creating my adverts and program, i used Adobe Illustrator because the software is easy to use and i had previous experience using this software, this allowed me to piece together my final products. Alongside this, I used Adobe Photoshop to edit my photos, in different ways, including, editing out backgrounds or creating new effects.

Audience feedback

I asked a few people, from different age groups, gender etc. I did this to get a review of our music video and my Ancillary tasks, these were some of the comments made:

On the video:

"The story line and narrative structure of the video means it is easy to follow and suits the theme and song." -Lauren 15

"The characters are easy to relate to as they are the same age as the target audience, it also bring back some memories of past experiences"- Alex 18

On the Ancillary Tasks:

"I like the use of photoshop, and feel this makes the adverts stand out and appeal to the target audience.." - Gavin 16

"The fonts are easy to read and are easily recognisable to Vanessa Carlton, as they are consistent between all the tasks. " -Lyndsey 29

Completion of Ancillary tasks

Below are the completed pages of my tour program, I used illustrator to piece together the final parts of my program.

Development of ancillary task

I then continued using illustrator to piece together my tour program, i had previously written up some articles for this, including sections such as about vanessa Carlton and other thing such as Competition and information on fan pages, I used the consistent fonts and colour schemes of our project, however i created some images using different styles and themes in photoshop- however this was acceptable as the tour program was not directly related to the posters and billboards etc.

Completion of Ancillary tasks

I had finally completed my magazine adverts, after the progress review from my teachers i edited my final versions of my advert. These are shown below:

Editing Continued

We had some few minor things left to shoot and edit, however the majority of our video was completed. we had to re align some of the footage with the music, as the lip sync was slightly out, we also had a few spaces where we needed more flashbacks, we booked out the equipment and camera needed and shot some more footage at my house that evening, we shot some small scenes such as, sitting on the sofa, candlelit dinners etc.

We also decided on how to end our music video, we had previously shot some scene where the couple we together, however slowly lipped away, we used their hands to show this. We sped up each of the flashbacks and put them in reverse for the ending, this was to tie in our theme of time, and the theme of love and despair.

Editing Continued

We then began to edit our video further, adding our flashbacks and looking at improvements that could be made. We decided to use a black and white filter over the flashbacks, we also edited the brightness and contrast of the flashbacks, making them appear whiter. We also edited in some photos of the couple together, we did this to make the story line seem more realistic and natural.

Filming:The Green screen

We booked the white screen for one day after school, we decided to use this for some of the more repetitive sections of the songs, these shots would be easy to edit and would fit with our genre of music, and the theme of our video.

For the white screen we used a prom dress, which we had previously used in one of the flashbacks, we did this to create a sense of love and despair within our video.

These are some of the shots we took with the Green screen:

Group Meeting

After editing some of our video footage together, we came together as group to discuss how to fill gaps in our footage, we decided that more shots of flashback of the couple together would be best appropriate for our video. We discussed various locations we could film Melissa and Aaran together, not only will this fill some spaces, but also enforce the romance and love within the video. We wanted to keep the flashbacks short, however convey the story line.

Below are a few of the suggestions our group came up with for the flashbacks:

  • Sitting on the sofa
  • At a bar, having a drink
  • Walking a dog
  • Dinner together
  • Cooking
  • Playing board games
  • Flowers
  • Water-fight

Each flashback will require alot of planning- as the costume, make up and location will have to vary in order to maintain a sense of verisimilitude.

Editing

We began editing our video together, we had to concentrate on get the lip sync exact, this was our main focus to begin with as when this was complete, we could start looking into shots that we had to Re shoot, and shots that we still needed to film!

Filming Continued

We continued filming throughout the half term- we shot locations such as Bexleyheath broadway, outside Starbucks, however there were some copyright issues we had to take into consideration, we were not allowed to show the Starbuck's logo in our shots. We also filmed at Mel's house, in her room, the shot showed Mel looking through old photos and card etc, we used a various amount of angles for this, including over the shoulder shot.

Feedback- Progress Review

The main focus of our progress review was to have our print work analysed by our media studies teachers, however the production of the music video was also discussed along with our blogs.
Each member of our group attended the meeting and brought the work they had done on their ancillary tasks so far. Both our teachers assured the group as a whole that our work was of a very high standard but collectively we were lacking a consistent theme that tied the products together. This was the first area of improvement we needed to discuss. I feel our group had communication difficulties which we needed to address immediately

I had a few minor editing changes to make to my ancillary tasks, small things such as the font needed changing to make all the ancillary tasks consistent.

We were also reminded that we should be constantly updating our blogs with our contributions to the project and that our teachers would be looking over them soon.
During the half term, the group is going to have another meeting to discuss collective changes to our work in order to incorporate a consistent and realistic theme.

Ancillary tasks Development

I continued to edit my photos using photoshop, and then began putting the images together in illustrator, I began by creating my magazine adverts, for both the album, the tour and vanessa carlton herself. Below are some of the stages:

Photo Re Shoots

Due to Melissa's sudden hair change we had to Re shoot some of our previous images- we came together to decide some new poses etc.

These are some of the photos we took on various days throughout the filming and on set photography days..

We have also booked out the green and white screen for further photo shoots.

Production Problems

We came across a few problems as Melissa (our lead woman) changed her hair colour dramatically, this gave us problems as we wanted to create a sense of verisimilitude throughout our video- we then decided to shoot the video from the beginning, however felt that some of the initial photographs could still be used.

We then made a filming schedule- of what need to be shot for each verse- we done this in detail as due to the set backs we were now limited for time.

Filming continued

We continued filming in various locations including: Nuxley village, the park, franks park woods and various group members houses.  We also continued taking photos on location.
